Best and Worst Supplements for Ailments

The following are list of the best and worst supplements when it comes to ridding yourself of the following ailments:

MUSCLE PAIN:

Best – heating pads; the warmth from the heating pad penetrates to release muscle tension that releases aches and pains.  It is wonderful for chronic joint pain.

Worst – muscle creams

HEADACHES:

Best – Sage.  If used frequently for 3 months or longer you will also see a profound improvement in hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms.

Worst – Evening Primrose Oil.  This doesn’t outperform placebos which are inactive.

CHEST CONGESTION:

Best – Cough Expectorant.  This will bring the phlegm up and out which is what you want – to get rid of it!

Worst – Cough Suppressant.  This keeps the cough down and you don’t want that.  You want it to come out.

CONSTIPATION:

Best – Probiotic supplements which gives the body back the bacteria that naturally helps you to digest.

Worst – laxative – chronic use and your body will forget how to do it on its own. This is only a quick fix.

GOOD NIGHT’s SLEEP:

Best – Chamomile tea which is a natural sedative.  Sleep on your right side as opposed to your left as this will give your heart a little extra room. Use a humidifier which will circulate the air and give you moisture to help you sleep soundly.

Worst – Alcohol (wine) – drinking before bed will give you a poor quality of sleep.  Sleeping on your left side will not give you as much space in your chest cavity giving you more problems for heart failure.  Using a fan as opposed to a humidifier will dry you out and cause you to wake up thirsty which will disrupt your sleep.  You will not get a relaxed sleep with a fan on in the room.

MIGRAINES:

Best – FEVERVIEW – 1200 mg a day.  This works medicinally to prevent your brain from dilating up.

Worst – Chamomile tea – this will only relax you, not get rid of your migraine.

ARTHRITIS:

Best – Chondroitin – 1200 mg a day. This has been shown to block enzymes that can cause problems and breakdown cartilage.  It reduces swelling and pain.

Worst – Arnica – this works well for muscles but not for joints.

LOW LIBIDO:

Best – Ginseng  - this will boost your sex drive!  It improves arousal in both genders.  Take 600 mg a day.

Worst – Yohimbe – causes rapid increase in blood pressure and heart rate.  This will get you excited but not for the right reason!

IMMUNITY:

Best – Astragalus – 1200 mg a day for stress and fatigue which can lower your immunity.

Worst – DHEA – mother of all stress hormones!

SOAPS TO PREVENT INFECTION:

Best – Foaming Hand Soap with olive oil.  This is a natural antioxidant that has two proven skin soothers like beta-kerotene and vitamin E which can also reverse sun damage.

Worst – Antibacterial hand soap – we don’t need the antibacterial in them because it can contribute to antibiotic resistance and dry your skin as well.

Dr. Oz: The 7 Day Energy Surge

Dr. Oz has collaborated with Jim Karas on a recent episode of his show where he discusses his NY Times Best Seller, “The 7 Day Energy Surge”.  Jim Karas says to listen to your body and do not reach for chemical energy such as coffee or energy drinks that will cause you to crash.  Too many of us are on a downward energy spiral and need to make positive changes to help improve our energy levels.

First, he says to makeover your morning.  When the alarm goes off, cover your eyes with the palms of your hands and massage the top of your head with your fingers while you inhale for 6 counts through your nose and exhale for 6 counts through your mouth. This will allow you to relax and give your body the oxygen that it needs.

Then wake up, turn on all the lights and open up the shades!  You need light!

Next, eat a power breakfast which is the most important meal of the day and will give you a great start!

Fourth, have a vitamin cocktail.  Mix magnesium (400 mg with 600 mg calcium) and tyrosine – 500 mg, 3 times a day.  This is an amino acid that helps cells talk to each other.  When you are stressed and your body cannot produce the right amounts, our bodies need this supplement.

Fifth, wheat grass powder which is packed with vitamins and nutrients can be found online for only $20.

Sixth, set the stage for sleep and listen to soothing music in the background 45 minutes before going to sleep.  Do this while you are getting ready for bed.

Last, be very well hydrated with lots of water throughout your day.  Eat high water content foods like fruits and vegetables!

Try these methods and you will see significant changes in your energy level!

Dr. OZ: Human Growth Hormone (HGH)

HGH is a very controversial topic and should be discussed.  On an episode of Dr. Oz, he discusses human growth hormone and its effect on women.  HGH is a natural hormone which is injected into the body to stimulate growth.  It was first used on children with stunted growth many many years ago.  Many women today consider it the fountain of youth and would do anything to take it, but is it safe?  It seems to be the latest anti-aging trend that many women are getting from their doctors, trainers and even over the internet!  Women say that they look and feel younger and have better sex.  Is it worth a try when we don’t know the effects?

Many people say that if you boost your hormone level with this synthetic HGH, you can feel DECADES younger, but doesn’t this mess with mother nature?  Can it shorten your life?  Apparently, it rebuilds elasticity and the skin begins to look younger. However, it is a potent agent and there has not been any long term data to show what may happen to those experimenting with this today.  We don’t know if it can cause cancer, diabetes, etc.  There is a good chance it will, but it is too soon to tell.

Short term studies have identified swelling, joint pain and carpel tunnel as symptoms of HGH use as well as elevated blood sugar which can lead to diabetes.  Without knowing the actual effects that HGH can have long term, are you willing to try it?

Dr. Oz does, however, offer ways to naturally and safely raise your HGH without injections.  These are definitely worth trying:

1 – L-Arginine – this is an amino acid which is a building block for growth hormone.

2 – Nut butter – take 2 tablespoons each day or eat more lean protein.

3 – Sleep – this is the most important!  You need to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.  Use a cooling eye mask and block out light!  You will sleep better this way.  Also, get a sleep machine with low frequency sound.

Dr. Oz Catches Heat From The FDA About Apple Juice

dr_oz_apple_juice

Editor’s Note: The following article is from an alternate source. Since we write quite a bit about Dr. Oz on this size and the benefits we believe the Doctor has for average people, it’s only fair to also report when Dr. Oz comes under a bit of fire as well. There are always 2 sides to every story, and we’ll leave it up to you to decide which side you’re on!

The federal Food and Drug Administration and a leading doctor are disputing suggestions by television show host Dr. Mehmet Oz that trace amounts of arsenic in many apple juice products pose a health concern.

Oz said on his show Wednesday [September 2011] that testing by a New Jersey lab has found what he implied are troubling levels of arsenic in many juices.

However, the FDA says the lab methods were not appropriate and that its own tests show much lower arsenic levels. The agency warned “The Dr. Oz. Show” producers in advance that their testing was misleading.

Dr. Richard Besser, a pediatrician and former acting head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, also scolded Oz Thursday on ABC’s “Good Morning America” show for scaring consumers with what Besser called an “extremely irresponsible” report, like “yelling `Fire!’ in a movie theater.”

The issue: arsenic is naturally present in water, air, food, and soil in organic and inorganic forms, according to the FDA.

“Organic arsenic is essentially harmless,” the agency says, and it passes through the body quickly. Inorganic arsenic is the type found in pesticides, and consuming it at high levels or over a long period can cause concern.

The testing “The Dr. Oz Show” did was for total arsenic, and the FDA even disputes those levels. The agency’s own tests found lower total arsenic from one of the same juice batches the show’s lab tested.

“There is no evidence of any public health risk from drinking these juices. And FDA has been testing them for years,” the statement says.

Note to consumers: They are talking about organic and inorganic arsenic – not organic versus non-organic fruits and vegetables.

An independent lab agreed with the FDA’s contention that the form of arsenic matters.

“A lot of things can have organically bound arsenic like kelp, but most of those flow right through you” and don’t accumulate, said William Obermeyer, a former FDA chemist who cofounded ConsumerLab.com. It is a company that tests dietary supplements and publishes ratings for subscribers, much as Consumer Reports does with household goods.

Tim Sullivan, a spokesman for Oz’s show, sent an email saying: “We don’t think the show is irresponsible. We think the public has a right to know what’s in their foods.”

Sullivan said Oz does not agree that organic arsenic is as safe as authorities believe, and that the show will do further tests to distinguish organic from inorganic arsenic in juice samples.

“The position of the show is that the total arsenic needs to be lower,” he said. “We did the tests. We stand by the results and we think the standards should be different.”

Dr. Oz: 5 Best anti-aging secrets to look younger

anti_aging_secrets

The following are 5 secrets to looking younger that Dr. Oz reveals on a recent episode of his show:

1 – Retinol – millions of women swear by this as there have been decades of research on this product and its amazing effects.  Use it nightly as it will significantly reduce the signs of aging.  No prescription is needed as it can be purchased over the counter!

2 – Wear high heels – altitude is attitude!  We all know that really high heels are not good for your feet and knees, however, there are ways around this.  You can still strut your stuff in a nice pair of heels, just wear straps so that you don’t have as much pressure on your toes.  Also, wear heels that are under 2 1/2 inches and don’t wear them for more than 3 hours at a time.  Look great, but be smart!

3 – Never go to bed without washing your face.  It is essential to having younger and healthier looking skin.  Develop good cleansing habits and stick with them on a nightly basis.  Make it part of your bedtime routine no matter how tired you may be.  Otherwise, you will risk looking even more tired as it will show all over your face when your skin begins to sag.

4 – Use olive oil on your hair since it has lots of Vitamin E and antioxidants for healthy looking hair.  Just spray a little or put a dab on your palm and massage it through your hair for an amazing look and feel.

5 – Use concealer/corrector on your skin to instantly make you look not tired and get rid of those dark circles under your eyes.  This is great for active moms!

A New Use for Artificial Sweetener (and 7 Other Weird Stain Removers)

Artificial sweetener for spills and splatters
If you are out to dinner at a restaurant, or even if grease splatters on you while you are cooking, use artificial sweetener immediately to blot the stain. The fine powder will absorb the oil. You may have to keep blotting and using more sweetener, but it really works! And artificial sweetener is always handy at any eatery.

Milk to remove ink stains
To remove ink stains from colored clothes, an overnight milk bath will often do the trick. Just soak the affected garment in milk overnight and launder as usual the next day.

Shampoo to prevent stains
Got ring around the collar? Cheap hair shampoo will break down body oils and act as a detergent.

Hair Spray for ink stains
Your toddler just went wild with a ballpoint pen on your new white shirt. Squirt the stain with hair spray and the pen marks should come right off.

Toothpaste for inks stains
Oh no, a pen opened up in the pocket of your favorite shirt! This may or may not work, depending on the fabric and the ink, but it is certainly worth a try before consigning the shirt to the scrap bin. Put non-gel toothpaste on the stain and rub the fabric vigorously together. Rinse with water. Did some of the ink come out? Great! Repeat the process a few more times until you get rid of all the ink. The same process works for lipstick.

Lipstick smear remover: Bread
Tear out the doughy center of white bread and knead it into a ball, then blot the smear repeatedly with the dough until the stain lifts from the fabric. Now wash the garment. The dough ball is also safe to use on lipstick marks on dry-clean only wool clothing.

Shaving cream tomato-sauce remover
Take a can of non-gel shaving cream and spray it onto the stain, rub it in gently and let it dry before washing as normal.

Cola for blood stains
It can all-too-easily happen: you’re near the end of a bike ride when your front wheel hits a pothole, sending you and the bike clattering to the ground. Hopefully, all that’s hurt is your pride and a bleeding elbow, which manages to leave bloodstains all over your clothes. It seems ridiculous, but soaking bloodstains overnight in cola removes them. Try it, it may sound insane, but it actually works!

Speed up your metabolism

speed_up_metabolism

There are many ways to speed up your metabolism and it’s all about making positive changes.  Throw your body a curveball and make positive changes that you can actually see through.  Eat regularly throughout the day and if you tend to forget to eat because of your busy schedule, then set your watch or phone on a timer to remind you to eat every 4 hours.  This will definitely boost your metabolism.  If you skip meals, you will eventually pig out on your next and want to eat everything you see.  However, if you eat more frequently, you will eat lesser portions and boost your metabolism at the same time.

Throw out your bad foods and tempting foods that you cannot resist, especially when you are hungry.  Or, put them away in the freezer so they are not so easily accessible. Studies show that when you have tempting foods around, you eat more and don’t even realize it. Remove the temptation and you have successfully hurdled one battle.

Minimize salt in your diet and replace with lemon juice.  This helps speed up weight loss significantly.  It makes you feel full longer and therefore, take in fewer calories.    Just making a few changes such as these can make a huge difference that you will see over time.

Drink at least 8 ounces of ice water daily.  This is a well known metabolism booster and will keep you full longer.  Remove sugary drinks from your diet completely and stick with water!

Last but not least, eat carbs within 30 minutes of exercising.  Your body will burn it off much faster.

Try the above and you will be pleasantly surprised with how quickly you will start burning more fat.

Ovarian Cancer – the silent killer!

By the time most women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer, it’s too late.  It’s been stated that there are no symptoms of ovarian cancer and regular gynecological visits do not even screen for them.  Regular pap smears screen for cervical cancer, not ovarian cancer.  There are, however, symptoms that you should not ignore such as bloating and cramping on your side and heavier periods than before.  Most women brush it off as having a urinary tract infection or bloating due to other causes and do not get checked.  If symptoms persist for more than a week, seek medical help. It may not be something to brush off!

Ask your doctor to perform a transvaginal ultrasound on you to further diagnose your condition and to see what may be sitting inside your ovaries.  The older you get, the greater your risk of ovarian cancer.  You can get ovarian cancer younger, but your risks greatly increase as you get older.  Unfortunately, genetics play a role as well and that is something we cannot control.  We can control our diet however, and this can play a major role in preventing ovarian cancer. There are different types of foods we can choose from that will help reduce our risk.

Some of these foods are raw endives, sea bass, and onions.  It is recommended to eat approximately 1/2 a cup of raw endives two times a week.   Sea bass has omega 3 fatty acids that reduce the risks of ovarian cancer by 30%.  Eat two to three servings per week (about 6 ounces).   Last but not least, onions can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer by 73%.  Red onions are the best.  Never boil them.  That reduces the cancer fighting properties by about 30%.  Fry them with a little bit of olive oil.  That’s best.  Half a cup every day is what is recommended.

Remember, if you have symptoms of bloating and cramping that seem abnormal and last longer than usual, seek medical help before it’s too late!

The 4 Best and 3 Worst Sweeteners to Have in Your Kitchen

At this point, it’s common knowledge that high-fructose corn syrup and refined sugar are bad for us. But given all the marketing hype behind different “natural” alternatives, it’s hard to know which ones really are the best sweeteners. Complicating matters, new studies, like one just published in the journal Cancer Research, are finding that fructose, a sugar found in high-fructose corn syrup, agave, honey, and, in small amounts, even in fruit, actually feeds some cancers. But don’t give up apples and oranges, or even honey, based on a single study. “Natural sugars found in fruits and vegetables—things like berries, green apples, grapefruit, kiwi—are needed to feed beneficial microflora in the gut for a healthy immune system,” explains Donna Gates, who led the movement to bring stevia, a natural sweetener, into this country more than a decade ago. “That’s why nature put a little bit of sugar in fruits and vegetables. It keeps the ecosystem alive in us,” she says, adding that the small amounts of fructose in fruits and vegetables are balanced with minerals, vitamins, and other vital nutrients. “Our body reads it differently,” she notes. Fruits and vegetables provide a perfect sugar fix, but when you’re in need of a sweetener to add to iced tea, baked goods, or anything else, make sure you know the difference between the good guys and bad guys of the sweetener world. (Some of the not-so-sweet details could leave you gagging.)

Bad Guy #1: Aspartame

There’s conflicting evidence regarding the safety of aspartame, a common chemical sweetener used in diet soda and other low-cal or low-sugar goods, but some people report headaches or generally feeling unwell after ingesting anything containing the chemical. To make life easier for everyone, this is one instance where you may want to follow the “better safe than sorry” principle. That’s because a University of Liverpool test-tube study found that when mixed with a common food color ingredient, aspartame actually became toxic to brain cells. Making matters worse, aspartame is used in many diet sodas, and studies have found drinking diet soda may increase your risk of developing diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Also of concern with aspartame, researchers have found that one harmful breakdown product is formaldehyde. Sweet? We don’t think so.

Bad Guy #2: Agave

While your health food store likely stocks agave sweeteners, it may be best to keep them out of your cart. Many agave nectars consist of 70 to 80 percent fructose—that’s more than what’s found in high-fructose corn syrup! If you don’t want to give up agave, look for types that contain no more than 30 to 40 percent fructose, recommends Christine Gerbstadt, MD, PhD, RD, spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association. Agave is also very heavily processed in an extremely energy-intensive manner that’s similar to the way corn is converted into high-fructose corn syrup.

Bad Guy #3: Sucralose

While sucralose, better known by its brand name, Splenda, may originate with sugar, the end product is anything but natural. It’s processed using chlorine, and researchers are finding that the artificial sweetener is passing through our bodies and winding up in wastewater treatment plants, where it can’t be broken down. Tests in Norway and Sweden found sucralose in surface water released downstream from treatment discharge sites. Scientists worry it could change organisms’ feeding habits and interfere with photosynthesis, putting the entire food chain at risk. The chemically derived artificial sweetener acesulfame K (sold under the brand name Sunett) was also detected in treated wastewater and tap water.

Good Guy #1: Stevia

“We need to be off of sugar, but we need good alternatives, and stevia is the safest sweetener there is, period,” says Gates, who coauthored The Stevia Cookbook: Cooking with Nature’s Calorie-Free Sweetener (Avery Trade, 2004). All types of stevia are extracted from the leaves of the stevia plant, but some forms taste better than others, says Gates. People tend to overuse powders, in which the sweetness is really concentrated, so if you’ve tried powders in the past and didn’t like them, try liquid forms, explains Gates, who helped develop a liquid stevia sweetener product. Stevia contains zero calories, but its one downfall is that it doesn’t work well for baking. Expect to see more stevia on store shelves, as Coke and Pepsi got the green light to use Truvia (a sweetener made in part from stevia) starting later this year.

Good Guy #2: Sugar alcohols

Popular sugar alcohol sweeteners include xylitol, sorbitol, and erythritol, natural sweeteners made through a fermentation process of corn or sugar cane. They contain fewer calories than sweeteners like pure sugar and honey, but more than stevia. They also leave a cooling sensation in the mouth, and have been found to prevent cavities, explains Dr. Gerbstadt. Just don’t overdo it—too much can cause GI distress.

Good Guy #3: Organic, raw local honey

While honey does boast higher fructose levels, it also contains a bounty of cancer-defending antioxidants, and local honey has been said to help alleviate allergy symptoms. Don’t limit raw honey’s use to your tea, either. Use it to speed healing on burns, and as a natural antiseptic on cuts and scrapes. Honey also has a low glycemic index, so adding it to your tea or yogurt won’t lead to energy-busting blood sugar drops later in the day.

Good Guy #4: Blackstrap molasses

Although heavy on the calorie content, blackstrap is rich in iron, potassium, and calcium, making it a healthier choice than nutritionally defunct artificial sweeteners or even regular refined sugar, despite the fact that blackstrap and refined sugar both come from sugar cane. (Dr. Gerbstadt says calorie-containing sweeteners are not recommended for people with diabetes.) We like the organic, Fair Trade Certified version of blackstrap molasses from Wholesome Sweeteners.
